A hand with three of a kind is considered to be the best possible hand. A hand with two aces is the lowest pair. The best five-card hand is a pair of jacks, but it is also possible to have a straight or five of a kind. In a community card game, a pair in the hole is larger than the community card on the board. The “backdoor flush” is achieved by hitting needed cards on the turn and the river.
The ante is a small bet all players must make before the cards are dealt. This is a small contribution to the pot, but it gives the pot a value immediately. It is often a fixed limit, meaning that a player cannot bet more than that amount.
A side pot is a separate pot from the main pot, and is created from additional money bet by the remaining players. The showdown is the final betting round. The first player to bet is said to bet, the player who matches the bet is called a caller, and the player who makes the last bet is said to be all-in.
